What we do

Away With Words offers a range of services for parents and for schools.

We offer assessment and intervention for a wide range of speech, language and communication difficulties. Therapy can be provided for:

• Understanding Language
• Using words and putting words together in sentences
• Developmental Language Disorder (DLD)
• Speech sounds (pronunciation)
• Grammar in spoken language
• Developing vocabulary
• Stammering
• Auditory memory and processing (listening to, interpreting and recalling spoken language)
• Social communication difficulties, including for children with Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
• Phonological awareness (early fundamental skills for literacy development)
• Articulation e.g. for children with Dyspraxia
• Children requiring Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) e.g. Makaton, Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS).

Home based assessment and therapy

We offer assessment and therapy to children in their own homes, working closely with families to ensure that the child is best supported to fulfil their communication potential. Our service begins with a free informal consultation over the telephone. A therapist will take some details, talk through your concerns and decide on the best plan of action for you and your child. This might be therapy sessions at home, interventions provided for your child at school with school staff support, or advice to help you support your child's needs on a daily basis.

Services for schools

We offer speech and language therapy interventions to primary and secondary schools in Yorkshire. We aim to enable schools and families to help children develop the best possible communication skills that they can, in turn helping children to achieve their learning potential. Service provision is agreed and delivered in ways that best meet the needs of individual children, staff and the school/school cluster as a whole. This may be through staff training, speech and language therapy groups or one-to-one therapy.
